That shiny new graphics card pushing pixels onto your display might be fast, but it could also get hot enough to fry an egg. You'll often see advice to not let your GPU run hotter than 80C, but some graphics cards seem to scoff at such a low limit. Is it really dangerous for your GPU to get hotter than 80C, and if so, what can be done?
Let's start with the first part: is 80C really too hot for a GPU? But specs aren't the whole story. Those worked fine when they were new, but six months or a year later? Not so much. The problem is that graphics cards need to strike a balance between performance, temperature, and noise. Clock a GPU faster and performance will improve, but temperatures will also increase.
To keep those temperatures down, the fan speed can be cranked up, but some graphics cards can get very loud if the fans run at higher RPMs. Graphics card manufacturers do their best to deliver an 'ideal' experience, but there's no single solution that will please everyone—some people prefer silence, others efficiency, and others performance. Thankfully, it's possible to customize your card so that it runs the way you prefer, rather than what the manufacturer thinks is best.
One great tool for dealing with a hot graphics card is MSI Afterburner. There are also similar utilities from other manufacturers, but whatever utility you use, the concepts are similar. If there's one thing the cryptocurrency mining era of the past several years has taught us, it's that consumer graphics cards are not intended to run at full performance and C all day, every day, for months at a time. The number of RMAs on graphics cards skyrocketed thanks to mining, which is lost money for both the card manufacturers and the miners.
To avoid this, most miners would try to find cards and settings that could maintain C under load, and the tricks and techniques used there often work just as well for gaming. Dealing with a hot graphics card is mostly the same as overclocking, only with a slightly different goal.
There are three primary variables you can tweak: fan speed, clockspeed, and voltage. The ideal settings will change depending on both your specific GPU and your specific card model, as well as personal preference.
If you want to keep performance high, start with fan speed and voltage. If you want to decrease noise, you'll probably want to play with all three variables.

Here's the quick rundown of each. Voltage and clockspeed both determine power use and how much heat needs to be dissipated. However, power use increases linearly with clockspeed, but with the square of the voltage, so a 10 percent drop in voltage will be much more beneficial than a 10 percent drop in clockspeed.
With Afterburner, you'll need to check the option to unlock voltage adjustments and restart the utility. After that, most GPUs can be safely tweaked up or down about 0.
AMD's Vega cards are particularly good candidates for undervolting in my experience. Newer Nvidia cards RTX series don't generally allow undervolting in the traditional sense, however.

If you've a system that gets much heavier use, though — a server, perhaps — then you'll need something stronger. And undervolting is the ideal candidate. It works like this. Your CPU receives a set voltage from the motherboard. This allows it to run at the given speed, but there's often a sizeable margin of error to make sure that your system can cope if the processor comes under heavy load. And that's why you'll almost certainly be able to reduce your CPU's voltage, running it at a lower temperature, cutting your fan speeds and reducing your system's power requirements.
Sound risky? Well, there are potential problems. Even if your system starts, it may crash later. If you make undervolting work, the results are very worthwhile.
And keep in mind that undervolting isn't about reducing performance, so your system should be as fast as it always was — just more energy-efficient. That can conflict with options like SpeedStep, though, which already reduce voltage when they're able to, so a better approach is to use a tool like RMClock which lets you set a custom voltage for each of your CPU multipliers. High-end models like the GeForce GX2 consume around 90W for 2D activities and around W for 3D graphics under load, and even lesser cards will be responsible for a high proportion of your PC's electricity bill Tom's Hardware has a list of the power requirements for a range of various graphics cards. You can minimise this effect by underclocking the cards, though. Try reducing the processor core and memory clockspeeds to the minimum allowed by your system.
This will drastically cut 3D performance, but Windows and 2D applications will most probably work just fine. And you can always restore the faster default settings if you want to run something that requires all of your graphics card's considerable power. To try this on an Nvidia system, right-click the desktop and choose 'Nvidia Control Panel'. Click 'Profile Save' to save your current settings, entering an obvious name such as standard.
Then click 'Profiles Save', enter a name like energy saver. This tweak alone cut our test system's idle power use by 15W, and consumption under load by 49W that's about a third. Of course, performance will be affected too, falling by around 75 per cent in our case. To get around this, click 'Adjust Custom Rules' and create a few rules to suit your needs.

Clean your system it if you havn't. Check all fans are working. Has the ambient temperature risen? Yes, it should lower the temperature. That said, you should blow out the dust, especially in your GPU heatsink, and made sure your fan curves are working as intended either set to auto or create a custom profile. Lowering the GPU's Power Limit will decrease power consumption, which in turn will lower the clockspeed and depending on the GPU will also lower the voltage, creating less heat.

It may run at lower clocks though, which is prob fine. U can also try limiting the fps and the gpu will downclock itself if it can maintain the fps lock.
