Prisoner of war movie

Ever since there has been war, there have been prisoners of war. In times gone by, they might have been sold into slavery, recruited into the winning side, or just killed out of hand. As societies became more civilised, they began to treat prisoners with more care, putting them in camps under guard, and providing them with the basics required to stay alive. Not all nations treated prisoners equally. Many were made to work, often in appalling conditions, treated little better than the slaves of old.

Some were starved, worked until they died, or executed for the smallest infringement of the rules. Food was usually of a poor quality, and medical care was generally lacking too. In some countries POWs were given relative freedoms, allowed to work on the land, and to associate with the local communities. In others, their existence was little more than being locked up for years on end, enduring endless hours of tedium.

Sometimes they tried to escape, and on many occasions, with some success. The film industry became interested in their situations, and soon caught on to the possibility of a new genre, the Prisoner of War film.

I am also leaving out La Grande Illusionwhich I have previously covered in an article here. Fought in many areas of the world, against a variety of enemies, it proved to be fertile ground for the makers of these films. But earlier wars also had their prison camps, and equally sad or stirring tales to tell. This started life as a TV film and later transferred to DVD, where it received generally good reviews.

After the battle of Cold Harbor, ina group of Union soldiers find themselves imprisoned in Camp Sumter, near Andersonville. They soon discover that conditions in the camp are appalling, with little food, and pitiful shelters to live in. Worse still, the camp is divided, with a group of prisoners stealing from their own comrades, and organising a violent regime.

The prisoners attempt to dig an escape tunnel, but are betrayed by another soldier seeking favours from the guards. With illness and disease rife, and many suffering from malnutrition, they decide to end the rule of the prisoners seeking to run things in the camp and a fierce riot breaks out.

They later try to get the commander, Captain Wirtz, to allow a trial of those responsible. He agrees, and the six ringleaders are hanged for their crimes. But for the others, the situation continues to deteriorate, and many more die from disease or hunger, before they are told that they will be exchanged for Confederate prisoners. This film is based on actual events, and portrays them with accuracy and attention to detail.

In reality, many prisoners on both sides suffered badly in that war, but this was especially true of those held in Confederate prisons as the rebels were not in a position to afford to care for them properly. Only five years after the war ended, this British film also depicted a true story, starring some well-known British actors including Leo Genn, David Tomlinson, and Anthony Steel, alongside a cast comprised mainly of amateurs.

Shot with little money and in a realistic style, it tells of the escape plot contrived by allied prisoners held at the air force prison camp, Stalag Luft III. Determined to get out, a group of prisoners have the ingenious idea of using a vaulting horse to cover their efforts to dig a tunnel out of the camp.

If this did not happen to be a true story, it would be incredulous in the extreme. When you get arrested by enemy. Barbed Wire Dolls Woman abused in cell by jailer in front of her tied up husband. Spoils of war - ReEdited.

In India it was officially adapted as finite episode television series P. The series, set indepicts three Israeli soldiers who were captured 17 years previously while on a secret mission with their unit in Lebanon. The story begins with the soldiers' return home after years of negotiations for their freedom. The series explores the reintegration of Nimrod and Uri into a society which has made them national icons, and into an interrupted family life, while working through the trauma of having been held captive and tortured.

They must deal with partners who waited or moved on, children who have grown up without them, and parents who have died. They also have to undergo psychiatric evaluations and military debriefings. When a military psychiatrist finds discrepancies in their stories, an investigation is launched to discover what they are hiding.

After flashbacks to events at a school in Metula inand to the period shortly after Nimrod and Uri's release, the second season rejoins the story a few days after the events at the end of the first season.

Initially disagreeing on what to do with their discovery that Amiel may still be alive, Nimrod and Uri take the information to Haim and Iris, who start to pursue their own unofficial investigation into what happened to Amiel - with unanticipated consequences.

Alongside this, the series continues to follow Nimrod and Uri and the soldiers' families as they pick up the pieces of their lives post-release. It also depicts Amiel for the first time as a living character - rather than in the visions experienced by Amiel's younger sister, Yael - and follows his new life as Yusuf, a Muslim, in Syria. At the time of broadcast, the first season of Hatufim was Israel's highest-rated TV drama of all time. The series was not without controversy. It was criticized by family members of soldiers held prisoner, including Miriam Groff, mother of one of the men released in the Jibril Agreement. She suggested that the series might encourage the kidnapping of soldiers. Not Rated min Adventure, Drama, History.

The film was followed by a sequel, Unbroken: Path to Redemptionin During an April bombing mission against the Japanese -held island of NauruLouis "Louie" Zamperini is flying as a bombardier of a United States Army Air Forces B Liberator bomber when his plane is damaged in combat and a number of the crew injured. One engine fails and the aircraft ultimately crashes in the ocean. Louie survives alongside two other crew members, Phil and Mac, floating on two inflatable rafts. On the 27th day adrift they attract the attention of a Japanese plane, which strafes and damages the rafts but misses them.

Mac dies six days later. On the 47th day Japanese sailors capture Louie and Phil. Now prisoners of warLouie and Phil are imprisoned on Kwajalein Atoll. The two American airmen are interrogated for information about newer bombers and the Norden bombsight. Louie states that they flew older models and draws a rendition of a Philco radio.

Here Louie discovers that Watanabe is again in command and the prisoners are put to work loading coal barges. Louie pauses during work and is punished by Watanabe making him lift a large beam, ordering a guard to shoot Louie if he drops it.War has been a favorite topic of cinema from the very beginning of the medium. Few experiences can compare to the extremes of war, the stakes are huge and few subjects make for such compelling narratives.

As a whole, films in this genre tend to follow a set structure. Men from different walks of life, sometimes different countries are imprisoned together under the harsh circumstances of war and must band together to escape.

POW movies provide more than a convenient movie formula, they make for perennial classics because they explore universal themes of human nature, our capacity for self-sacrifice and the unshakable determination that comes with the innate desire for freedom. Staring Frank Sinatra as the complex Colonel Von Ryan鈥 an American officer despite the German name 鈥攚ho leads a group of British and American POWs on a mission to escape the Italian peninsula after they capture the train transporting them from Southern Italy into the German heartland.

The high point of the film is the bravura final sequence where Von Ryan leads a detachment of men to hold off the pursuing German troop train while the other POWs fix the tracks that will take them into Switzerland. Not a must-see, but an excellent rainy day watch. Rescue Dawn is inspired by the real events surrounding the escape of Dieter Dengler from the hands of Laotian captors during the Vietnam war.

Dengler was awed by flight when he witnessed the bombardment of his German home town during WWII and the event made such an impression on him that he emmigrated to the US to train as a Navy pilot. Rescue Dawn is an unlikely straightforward project for Werner Herzog. The film takes place in Denmark shortly after its liberation from Nazi occupation and focuses on a group of German POWs forced to clear by hand the thousands of land mines laid on a stretch of beach.

The film accomplishes the task of making us care for the Germans by casting them as children, barely old enough to understand the consequences of the war they were conscripted to fight. Land of Mine stands out from most other films in the genre for dealing with the experience of Nazi prisoners, rather than allied troops in WWII. Still, the film is very much worth watching and stands as one of the most moving films in a genre known largely for thrills. The film revolves around the prisoners of the eponymous camp and their attempts to uncover a Gestapo mole in their midst.

Suspicions fall on Sgt. Sefton William Holdenwho buys privileges from the guards using the cigarettes he earns through various hustles. Billy Wilder brings his trademark wit and humor to the film, which may seem like a strange fit of tone and subject matter, but Wilder manages to show that humor and camaraderie is sometime the most effective response to captivity.

So what makes A Man Escaped a great film? W movies. And my sympathies with Alexey Yarmolnik as a German prisoner in Shashka :.
