Inthe Constitution of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians was approved and they worked for the girls under the leadership of Mary Domenica Mazarello. Inhe set up a pious union of Salesian Co-operators, a lay association to collaborate with him in his mission. Thus we see in the life of Don Bosco that he gathered religious men, women and lay people to fulfill his mission.

Today Salesian Family refers to an assembly of groups, institutes and association that share Don Boscos charism, spirituality and mission towards the young. These units were either founded directly by Don Bosco or developed after his death by his followers. These groups strive to better the social world like Don Bosco who was concerned with the temporal and spiritual salvation of the youth and the working classes.

These groups are means to fulfill the mission of Don Bosco. Today there are 27 groups the world over under the umbrella of the Salesian Family. In the past we worked separately for the Cooperators and the past pupils except on the occasion of the Salesian Family day. On this day we have Holy Eucharist, variety entertainment and fellowship dinner in common. The Co-operators have their AGM, pilgrimage at Mount Mary, Bandra in the month of September, annual retreat, outreach programs to any destitute home and Lenten recollection in the month of April.

During summer vacation sometimes picnics are organized. They had their AGM during which elections were held. In the month of December, the past pupils attended 9th Asia-Australia Congress held in Philippines. The Salesian Family is a vibrant reality. To keep it alive we the Salesian Family has to change our mentality. We need to shift our emphasis for excessive autonomy to synergy of a vast movement of persons.

We need to underline not the autonomy of the individual groups but the synergy of the whole family. We have to stress on the culture of communion rather than individualism. Two brothers volunteered, however they made it only as far as Napoli in southern Italy when WWII broke out and all plans were postponed indefinitely. Two years after the War, then provincial Fr Ciantar reminded the Superiors in Turin about the pre-war agreement and so Peter, a bootmaker and Silvio, a tailor, having been professed religious now for 4 years were chosen as substitutes to fulfil the original mission.

Before leaving Italy they requested to make their perpetual profession and the Superiors granted the privilege to do so. Fr Ciantar played a crucial role in ensuring the early successes of the Salesians in Australia. In they moved to Adelaide to start teaching technical courses. In he moved to Brunswick to work in the hostel and carried on with cooking and tailoring.

Afterwards, he spent three years in the formation community of Oakleigh, before then going on to Lysterfield, where he ended up spending two thirds of his religious life.

In Lysterfield, Silvio worked with the young Salesians in formation, cooking for them and making their cassocks in the days when they were still worn, as well as making the robes for other orders and diocesan priests.

When they were no longer used, echoes from his very young life rung through; he became interested and took over the supervision of the farm. Silvio was there for many years, until eventually the body became too frail for such work and he moved to the St. He is the sort of charcter that even just the mere mention of his name to someone who knows him will cause them to recall fond memories and happy stories - and so often the word used to describe him is "inspirational", or even, "real-life saint".

Cafasso entrusted him with the task of visiting the prisons where, for the firs t time, he encountered and witnessed the alarming and the unfortunate conditions of many young prisoners. His encounter with these young prisoners had a deep impact on him — it touched him, disturbed him and moved him to reflect on what needed to be done. He considered himself sent by God to respond to the cries of the poor and the young. His insight told him that it was important to give an immediate response to their problems and above all to prevent the causes through a holistic educational approach.

This is why he first of all sought to take upon himself the care of orphaned and abandoned youth who came to Turin in search of work, their parents being unable, or uninterested in caring for them.

Social exclusion is to be understood in the broader sense which goes beyond the mere. It also refers to limited access to education, culture, housing, work, lack of recognition and achievement of human dignity and the fact that they are often disbarred from exercising real citizenship.
