Looking at putting in an order for a Scamp 13 soon but my wife and I are debating over whether we should go with the Big Bed design or the Standard design. It seems the trade offs are counter space and closet for more bed space. I'm curious if most couples go with the big bed design for a little more sleeping space my wife is short but I'm 6'2" and leave the standard bed design mostly for single campers. Interested in members thoughts on either design option. We have a 16 Scamp Deluxe which includes the bigger bed design.
I might suggest if you are making the purchase in-person at Scamp HQ you can look at the various trailers they have built. Everyone is very friendly and helpful at the factory. We are very glad we decided on the big bed for our 13 standard.
We are not big people but we still like the extra room. The little less cabinet is not an issue for us. My husband and I are not large people 5'9" and 5'8" and we don't weigh a lot. We found the standard bed a bit too small width-wise for comfort. I sleep on the couch, which is perfect for me. I am not sure at 6'2" you could stretch out without going a bit diagonal. Have you had a chance to spend some time in a 13'?
Viewed an older Boler trailer which is roughly the same size. Still looking to get in a 13 locally with and without the big bed leaning in that direction though. The length of the bed may be as much an issue for you as the width, but the big bed would probably help. If you get the AC the interior headroom may present an issue for you as well, since it drops down a few inches in the cabin.
Have you seen or spent any time in a 13? There are plenty of both that folks would be glad to show you in your area before you order. You can post a request here in the general forum and call Scamp Trailers and ask for owners in your area that are willing to show you their trailer.
We much prefer the large bed.

The loss pf counter space and closet space was an easy trade off, after all it is nice to be comfortable. My wife and I found sleeping head to toe with sleeping bags was the best way to deal with the 44" bed. We only shopped for 54" bed trailers in recent years. The latest requirement now is no crawl over. Here are two options we have developed:.
That makes a big difference! We also have developed a way to widen the front bed, which also involves a cantilever and the use of filler foam pieces. This process has been narrated in an article posted on this website, with photos. My sister and I are looking for a used Scamp without a bathroom. We live in Massachusetts and we are willing to drive up to 10 hours to buy one. I was lucky to meet some people on the road a couple of years ago who had one and they invited me inside and it was love Scamp at first sight for me.New Member here.
I will be picking up my new Scamp 16 next week. Could anyone tell me what size foam mattress i will need? We picked up our new to us Scamp 16 last fall and we're also looking for a mattress solution. I think we're going to go with something like a 3" or 4" latex topper and just leave the bed set up all the time.
In reading many posts on bed size, it seems like there is some variability in measurements being taken. But since we're going to cut ours to fit, we're not going to sweat that too much.
Anyway, various owners of the Scamp 16 report a width of 44" or 45" and an length that varies from 74" to 78". We've seen a full size latex topper listed at 53" x 75", so that seems like a good place to start. Many folks suggest using an electric carving knife to trim the topper after carefull scribing the curves and actual width.
Thanks Rich for the info. I will be picking up my Scamp this coming Tuesday and hope to see you and Maggie on the road some. They are multi layer foam with a regular house mattress covering.
I did get the shell and used it with the OEM cushions and a 3" foam topper. Before spending much money you might want to just get a 3 inch thick Queen size foam topper and cut the curves out. They say an electric carving knife works well.
Big Bed vs. Standard Bed
I used a razor with a board on top compressing the foam so I could cut it better. I sleep very comfortably on the cushions supplied by Scamp! I almost feel I need to apologize for that!
